Four Tips for an Inspiring Kitchen

Just as a stark cubicle leaves you less than inspired to work, an uninviting kitchen makes you want to steer clear. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to transform the supposed heart of the home into the actual heart of your home. Below are four tips for creating a cozy kitchen in which you’ll want to relax, reconnect with loved ones and enjoy cooking.

1. Give Your Cabinets a Facelift
Every kitchen has cabinets, but not every kitchen has enviable cabinets. Join the latter category in one of several
ways. You’re in luck if you’ve got wood cabinets to work with.
It’ll take you a weekend, but you can sand them down and either re-stain or repaint them to suit your modern taste. Another budget-friendly option is to replace the doors and cover any existing remnants of the previous cabinets with veneer. Both of these options are simple fixes and can make looking at — and being in — your kitchen a more pleasant experience for everyone.
Of course, if you have more wiggle room in your budget, custom cabinets can transform your space. Not only will your storage look better, but you can redesign it so that your space is more functional. Function leads to ease of use and ease of use will most likely inspire you to spend more time in your kitchen.
2. Let the Light In
Perhaps you don’t like your kitchen because it’s got less of a cozy vibe and more of a dungeon-y one. If you’d like more light, there are plenty of fixes that extend beyond the traditional over-the-table lamp. For one, you could add under-cabinet lighting that would add a soft glow to your countertop workspace. This would not only be helpful during the day, but it would be a nice look in the evening, as well.
You might consider painting your walls white or a lighter shade, too, as white reflects light for a brighter, cheerier feel. This is an especially good option if you’re only working with a little bit of natural glow from the windows in your kitchen. A major overhaul might inspire you to do all of the above or even install a brand new window to flood the place in sunlight. Either way, natural light is one of the most welcoming features that a home can have. It’ll certainly make you want to spend time in your kitchen if it’s well-lit and cheerful.
3. Don’t Shy From Décor
When you think of choosing knick-knacks, rugs, plants and fabrics, it’s probably not the kitchen that you’re focused on. Other rooms in the house get more attention, but if you want to love your kitchen as much as you do those other spaces, it has to be equally as spruced. While you’ll want to choose more durable materials and easy-to-clean upholstery so that you’re prepared for spills, you won’t be stuck with a few drab options.
Lay the groundwork by picking a fun color scheme and building on it with fun accents that spark a conversation or simply make you smile. The most important thing when it comes to the décor you choose — or really any decision you make regarding the look of your kitchen — is that you pick décor that you like.
4. Do What You Like
Every room in your home should be a reflection of who you are, whether it’s through a color scheme that you love, a piece of artwork that speaks to you or a kitschy collection of teacups you’ve saved since you were a little girl. Even if you have a kitchen that’s not quite your dream space, making it your own will make you more comfortable there and more likely to hang out there.
Once you start hanging out in a kitchen regularly, you’ll probably be inspired to grab those utensils and whip up something even more special than the space that surrounds you. Keep these tips in mind when you want to update your kitchen again.
